Ethereum Foundation Launches ‘Protocol’ Unit to Streamline Scaling and UX
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has consolidated its core research and development efforts under a new organizational unit called Protocol, aiming to streamline innovation across the Ethereum network.
Launched on June 2, the Protocol initiative is centered on three technical priorities: scaling the Ethereum base layer, increasing blob capacity for layer-2 rollups, and improving user experience. This restructuring aligns Ethereums internal teams around a shared roadmap, making these priorities the exclusive criteria for resource allocation and development focus.
Streamlined Leadership for Key Focus Areas
The EF has assigned leadership roles across each of the three tracks:
Responding to Ethereums Evolving Role
According to the Foundation, the reorganization reflects Ethereums growing role as a settlement engine in a maturing ecosystem. Advances in zkEVMs, robust L2 infrastructures, and wider adoption have made tighter integration between research, engineering, and client development more essential.
By uniting its technical teams under a single banner, Protocol aims to accelerate the journey from theoretical research to production-grade code. The EF expects this structure to foster stronger feedback loops across cryptography, client development, and interface design.
The Protocol initiative marks a strategic shift as Ethereum continues evolving to meet scalability and usability demands in a high-throughput, multi-layer environment.
