Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stressed that maintaining continuous network operation remains central to the blockchain‘s mission. He made these statements during Ethereum’s 10th anniversary in a livestream with Ethereum‘s core contributors. Buterin emphasized that Ethereum’s purpose of advancing human progress and protecting digital autonomy requires absolute reliability.

The network has maintained perfect uptime throughout its decade-long operation and processed billions of transactions while implementing 16 major protocol upgrades. Global Platform Requires Censorship Resistance

Buterin defined Ethereum as a “global, secure, permissionless platform for developing general purpose applications” and argued that such functionality was enough to make strong censorship resistance a requirement. In the absence of protection, the network would instantaneously lose both its global and permissionless nature.

The co-founder recalled the original vision of an open space where developers worldwide could develop applications openly and express themselves. This original objective has facilitated unexpected innovations like NFTs, which Buterin admitted surprised him despite the open nature of the platform.

Ethereums programmability allows users to build bespoke applications on top of the foundational layer, giving rise to a platform that goes much beyond the original white paper requirements.
