Crypto.com, a digital currency trading platform, has hired Roeland Van der Stappen, a Brussels-based regulatory expert, as its new Vice President of Policy in charge of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
Van der Stappen confirmed the appointment on his LinkedIn page, revealing that he is preparing to enter the crypto and Web3.0 worlds.
“I‘m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Vice President, Policy and Engagement, EMEA at Crypto.com! Looking forward to diving into #crypto and #Web3 policy issues and begin sharing all the great things my colleagues are working on,” Van der Stappen announced.
Van der Stappen had a distinguished career, most notably as the Head of Regulatory Affairs for Visa, the American payments processing behemoth. His diverse skills will benefit Crypto.com in its quest of regulatory compliance across the board.
Regulators have started scrutinizing cryptocurrency exchanges as the necessity to conform to a comprehensive Anti-Money Laundering (AML) legislation becomes more of a global movement. The trading platform has maintained its status with market watchdogs all over the world in an impressive manner over the last year, thanks to the hiring of a number of veterans who have assisted it in navigating the tricky terrain with regulators.
Cryptocurrencies have received a lot of attention recently, and their growing popularity has prompted watchdogs to step up their monitoring even further. The modalities for regulating the nascent ecosystem are truly diverse and uncertain, ranging from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which is considered high-demand selective in granting licenses to trading platforms to operate in the country, to the South Korean financial regulator, which has sent many exchanges packing due to their inability to ink partnerships with traditional banks last year.
While Van der Stappen will be essential in navigating this terrain for Crypto.com, other exchanges are also adding experienced veterans to map a similar growth path for their platform and services.
