The Wikimedia Foundation has stated that bitcoin donations will be suspended across all of its sites.
The move was necessitated by requests from the Foundation's donor community, as stated in an announcement shared by the Foundation.
The Wikimedia Foundation is an umbrella organization for a collection of platforms that follow the Wiki style of website, which allows for modification by multiple internet users. Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and Wikinews are some of the branches within the company's body.
The Wikimedia Foundation began accepting digital currencies for donations in 2014 at the request of its community, and it stated that the decision to discontinue these forms of donation is the result of months of discussion by the same community about the suitability of digital assets as donation assets for the platform.
“The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to discontinue direct acceptance of cryptocurrency as a means of donating. We began our direct acceptance of cryptocurrency in 2014 based on requests from our volunteers and donor communities. We are making this decision based on recent feedback from those same communities,” the announcement from the foundation reads.
According to the Wikimedia Foundation, the implication of the move is that it will close down its Bitpay account, removing its capacity to directly accept cryptocurrencies as a manner of donation.
Due to the high energy consumption and carbon footprint of Bitcoin (BTC) and other Proof of Work (PoW) cryptocurrencies, a number of detractors have continued to dismiss the environmental friendliness of digital currencies. The Wikimedia Foundation's decision to exclude crypto donations was preceded by a similar decision by Mozilla, the tech company in charge of the Firefox browser.
Because of the environmental impact of the emerging asset class, Mozilla Corporation has also backed down on its acceptance of cryptocurrency. The sole difference between the judgments of Mozilla and the Wikimedia Foundation is that the latter is open to additional expansion in the crypto business in the near future.
