Emirates Airlines has announced ambitions to use innovative digital solutions such as bitcoin, metaverse, and blockchain to improve customer happiness.
During a press conference at the Arabian Travel Market, Emirates CEO Adel Ahmed Al-Redha stated that the Bitcoin payment option would be implemented with greater flexibility. Non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles will also be available for purchase on the company's website.
The aerospace giant aspires to streamline and trace flight data using blockchain technology as the largest airline and flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Furthermore, the airline sees NFTs and the metaverse as stepping stones toward addressing the needs of customers. According to Al-Redha:
“With the metaverse, you will be able to transform your whole processes — whether in operation, training, sales on the website, or complete experience — into a metaverse type application, but more importantly, making it interactive.”
Because the metaverse and NFTs are new technology domains, Emirates plans to hire more employees to improve this sector by developing programs that monitor client wants. Different airlines, such as Norwegian Air, have jumped on the crypto bandwagon in order to provide their customers with a worthwhile experience.
Meanwhile, Emirates' decision to enter the crypto field may be driven by a paradigm shift in the UAE, as the country's interests shift from oil to cryptocurrency and metaverse, among other blockchain and broader technical breakthroughs. For example, the country plans to build a legal framework to facilitate the operation of blockchain and crypto enterprises in order to become a blockchain capital.
In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UAE has already established a number of free zones. Furthermore, crypto firms were granted permission to operate in the Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre (DMCC) free zone last year.
