Arweave sends encrypted data to the moon

Decentralized data storage company Arweave has launched its “Genesis Block” to the moon in collaboration with two other companies.

Arweave (AR), in partnership with Iridia and LifeShup, has sent encrypted data and cryptocurrencies in a wallet on a space mission, according to a Jan. 15 press statement.

The concept tapped Iridia‘s synthetic DNA-based storage technology and LifeShip’s lunar landing craft to rocket Arweaves data capsule to the moon.

Founded in 2017, Arweave has sought to provide cheap permanent storage for the “worlds knowledge and history,” beginning with its Genesis Block, said Arweave CEO Sam Williams.

This playful venture to the moon underscores how permissionless networks like Arweave can incubate new storage innovations—molecular storage included. We‘re thrilled to see Iridia and ASI pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

The mission also included sending Artificial Super Intelligence Alliance (FET) tokens in an Iridia Molecular Wallet. According to the joint statement, the moons stable environment and nanotechnology will preserve the data for millennia.

“Its about safeguarding knowledge and digital assets for generations to come in a way that transcends the boundaries of time, space, and even imagination,” said Buck Watia, VP of product and commercial at Iridia.
