Recently, there are rumors that the airdrop of Soneium might be approaching. In reality, it has been talked about since August 2024, when Sony Block Solutions Labs announced the Soneium project.
Since then, there has been much discussion, but still without any official confirmation. For example, on the same official X profile of Soneium from which the launch announcement was made, there is still no reference to the possible airdrop.

Will Soneium really release an airdrop to its community?
`
In theory, thanks to the airdrop, the tokens of Soneium should be distributed, that is, the native cryptocurrency of the project.
As of today, there is still no trace of this crypto, even though the mainnet has been operational for several months. In addition to the mainnet, several bridges are already active and many tokens.
According to some sources, the snapshot to be eligible for the airdrop might be near, even though the date is still unknown. However, it is important to know that the airdrop should only be released to those included in the snapshot, while later on there might not be any more.
To find out how to participate, you can follow the guide published on this same site months ago.
Other sources suggest that already May 2025 could be a good time to proceed with the snapshot.
Note that in the last few weeks the Soneium team has been very active, launching several initiatives.

The Soneium Network
`
Soneium is a new layer-2 for Ethereum developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs.
This is a scalability solution built on the OP stack of Optimism, and it has already collected more than 120 million dollars in TVL in DeFi, in line with, for example, TON.
Currently, however, it is not yet a decentralized network, and it is possible that when it becomes one, the governance token will be launched, perhaps distributed with an airdrop.
The project aims to become decentralized, so it is quite likely that a governance token will be launched sooner or later. However, details about a potential airdrop are not yet available.
If truly the direction of the Sony Block Solutions Labs project will be towards decentralization, it is very likely that a governance token will be launched. However, if the company wants to maintain control of the project, it is possible that it will never be equipped with a native cryptocurrency, as happened, for example, to another famous Ethereum layer-2, namely Base by Coinbase.
As of today, not only is it unknown if the governance token will be launched, but it is also unknown if it will be distributed via an airdrop, and how to participate.
However, it seems likely that sooner or later a governance token will be launched and distributed.

The governance token
`
Within decentralized projects, governance tokens are essential to proceed with voting.
In fact, only with governance tokens can legitimate votes be obtained, within a decentralized system, so anyone who wants to create a decentralized system capable of developing and evolving must indeed resort to the governance token.
The alternatives are either not to decentralize the project, as in theory Sony Block Solutions Labs could do, or do like Bitcoin and make the evolution very slow and complicated (something to be excluded for projects like Soneium).
Generally, governance tokens are not simply put up for sale after being created, but are often distributed to the community that has already participated in the development of the project when it was still centralized.
The case of Soneium from this point of view is emblematic, therefore not only does it seem likely that sooner or later a governance token will be created, but also that it will be distributed to the community via airdrop.
The latest news on Soneium
Recently, the project announced several new developments.
One of these is Assemble on Soneium, a global initiative that rewards real usage. It is a community initiative promoted by Superboard, started on April 16th and ending on May 15th.
It is a game that allows you to earn points by completing a mix of single and repeatable on-chain missions throughout the ecosystem.
Another is the Fast Finality Layer, based on Astar Network, AltLayer, and EigenLayer, to improve transaction finality.
Aims to provide an additional layer of security with a finalization time of less than 10 seconds to serve apps that require high security requirements and low latency.
Interesting is the support obtained from JASRAC, the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers, and Publishers, as a blockchain network for the Creator DX platform, KENDRIX.
This peak of activity suggests that the project is ready for the next big step, even if it might still be a bit early to imagine reaching a decentralization based on a governance token.
