Ethereum Researcher Proposes 100x Gas Limit Increase by 2029

Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist has introduced a bold new proposal aiming to exponentially scale the blockchains capacity over the next four years.

In a newly published Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-9698) on Sunday, Feist outlined a plan for a gradual hundredfold increase in Ethereums gas limit. Under the proposed structure, Ethereum clients would follow an exponential voting schedule to raise the gas limit, with a tenfold increase every two years — starting in June 2025.

A Predictable Growth Pattern for Ethereum Scalability

Feist‘s idea revolves around a “deterministic gas limit growth schedule,” where the limit would rise steadily based on predictable, preset epochs. By 2029, this could push Ethereum’s gas limit from the current 36 million up to 3.6 billion.

“This EIP encourages a sustainable and transparent gas limit trajectory, aligned with expected advancements in hardware and protocol efficiency,” Feist explained.

If fully realized, this adjustment could enable ETH to handle up to 2,000 transactions per second, according to ecosystem developer Fabrice Cheng.

Potential Challenges and Node Operator Adaptation

While the proposal paints an ambitious future, Feist recognized several hurdles. The rapid increase in throughput could pressure less-optimized nodes and lead to longer block propagation times. However, he emphasized that the gradual rollout would give node operators and developers enough time to optimize performance and maintain network stability.

The Ethereum community is now beginning discussions around EIP-9698, weighing the potential for massive scalability gains against the risks of increased technical debt.
